Originating in the United States in 1994, Queer (or LGBTQ+) History Month represents the rich, dynamic, and inspiring history of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer rights movement. Observed in October, Queer History Month is an opportunity to learn about and appreciate the many activists, writers, and artists who have (and continue to) advocate for LGBTQ+ equality.
As a Jewish magazine that celebrates culture and history, Nu Magazine is committed to the values of equality and the practice of honouring history. Jewish and queer history intersect at many essential points; several noteworthy queer rights activists have been Jewish. Some of these inspiring individuals include first openly gay U.S. elected official Harvey Milk, German Jewish doctor who aimed to decriminalize homosexuality Magnus Hirschfield, and Joy Ladin, a Yeshiva University professor who fights for transgender inclusion in Judaism.
In Montreal, Jewish Queer groups, such as Ga’ava Quebec, aim to make Jewish community a more welcoming place for members of the LGBTQ+ community. Ga’ava participated in Montreal’s pride parade this past year, as it has for the past several years. Individual synagogues and community centres also work to welcome everyone in the community.
Though there is no rabbinical consensus on transgender transition prayer, different rabbis throughout the world have attempted to adapt and create Jewish prayers for the process. The infographic above provides prayers focused on transgender inclusion and hope. Whether you are reciting, reading, or simply learning about these prayers, they are a step in the process of LGBTQ+ acceptance within the Jewish community.
